Trying To Gear Up...

Only 46 days until Christmas 2010. Un-be-liev-a-ble. This year has to be a part of some kind of rift in the space-time continuum. Where did the year go? Where has my life gone?

Well, other than contemplating my mortality, I've been spending some time trying to gear myself up for the holiday season. For some reason, I just can't seem to get into the groove. Not sure if it's because I'm working again this year and keep reflecting back on how nice it was to be home last holiday season doing what I so love to do...decorating, baking, preparing. Or if it's because I'm not feeling the best physically and really can't wait until my insurance takes effect next month so I can get to a doctor. Or if I'm basically an honest-to-goodness Scrooge this year and wish I could just sleep through the entire thing. Who knows.

Either way, it's coming whether I like it or not. How do I act as if I'm the jolliest of jolly for my daughter's sake? How do I make it happy for her when I'm absolutely miserable?

I wish I could talk to Mom... :(

Five Fridays

Ah, Fall. It's heading to the mountains with a vengence. The air is cooler, the trees are starting to turn, and the air is so fresh and clean. My favorite time of year!

And this month is pretty awesome. There are 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays, and 5 Sundays. Only happens once every 823 years! :)

Although the new job pays the bills (been there a month), I sure miss being able to stay home. Heading into the holidays I can't help but remember how nice it was to be home last year and do all the baking and decorating without having to work a full-time job. And stitch when I wanted to. But alas, bills have to be paid and I'm always the responsible one. It was nice while it lasted.

Computer Withdrawals & Cure

There's nothing like not having computer access for a few months to cure your addiction. It was hard at first. I was completely lost without it. But I soon realized I could actually do other things instead of sitting in front of my monitor. Yes, other things! Can you imagine? And now that I'm back online, it seems as if the computer is something I can do when I have time between my "other" things. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be anyway? LOL

Maddy is looking forward to school starting in less than a month, and I'm working a part-time job. I really wish I didn't have to go back to work, but I guess I figured I would have to eventually. Staying home was good while it lasted, but it didn't last nearly long enough.

Maddy and I are planning a get-healthy menu beginning next month, including more smoothies, healthier recipes, lots of veggies, and not buying the fattening snacks we've been keeping in the house. She's a skinny little thing, but she's very conscious about eating right which makes me happy. I'm looking forward to dropping some more weight over the Fall months. Hopefully by Christmas I'll be a lot closer to my goal, thanks to my personal trainer princess! :)

Carpet Vs. Hardwood

And the hardwood wins hands down! Landlady gave me permission to rip the carpet out of the living room, which is the only room that has it. A test strip shows very pretty hardwood underneath, so I'm excited! I'm just not a carpet person.

Another record-breaking warm day for us today. It's beautiful outside. We're expecting storms tomorrow which I'm definitely looking forward to. Nothing like a nice spring thunderstorm!

Today is Groundhog Day, and Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. 6 more weeks of Winter. 6 more weeks of scenes like this. And 6 more weeks of the chance of snow days, like today. Miss M is very happy!

The Tree

For the past couple of years we've had a real tree, and I'm not sure I'll ever go back to artificial, despite the convenience. There's just nothing like a real tree at Christmas. It was our intention since it was our first year "back home" to take Miss M into the woods and cut our own tree, but with Mother Nature bombarding us with 22" of snow, that was rather difficult. So, we compromised and headed out to buy one.

THIS was the one, and we think it turned out very pretty. :)

Another year and another Christmas in the books. Time to start planning for Christmas, 2010! :)

Another rainy and chilly day here in the mountains. I'm enjoying the whole "hibernating" thing. Comfort food, some good TV, and lots of family time. Before we know it it'll be time for yard work and air conditioning.

I'm planning to start my workout schedule again on Monday. It's that time. Last year I lost 35 pounds from February thru June, and this year I'm expecting no less thanks to my coach, Richard Simmons. He's a true inspiration! So, I'll be tracking my progress here and by the Summer I'll be back in my shorts and feeling great. :) Ah, determination!

Back To Life

I've really enjoyed looking through my older posts and remembering. Blogging is so much like a diary and I'm glad to be back in the swing. :)

A lot has happened since my last entry. I moved from Richmond "back home" to Bluefield, Virginia. Not technically all the way home to McDowell County, but close enough. For now I'm a SAHM and enjoying every minute of it while it lasts.

On November 14th, my niece Megan gave birth to my sweet grand-niece Brandie. Isn't she a little angel?

Mom and baby are adjusting well, and it's so great having a little one to hold and play with again. Gosh knows when I'll have grandbabies, so I'll just have to spoil Miss Brandie! :)

It's nice to be back.

Peacocks at the Park

Miss M and I went to a local park on Sunday for a nice picnic and some fresh air. This park has a small animal farm with goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, etc., and we enjoyed visiting with all the critters. This fella really made an impression...

He was sure feeling his oats strutting around and calling, and when he saw Miss M with the camera, he couldn't help but show his stuff...

Isn't he handsome? His mate was roosting inside the building, so I'm thinking he was probably calling out to see where she was...

We had a really great afternoon. We're definitely looking forward to warmer weather and getting out more.

We had a great girl's day out together. She had the works, from the shampoo to the style. She sure is growing up, the little diva.

It's rather chilly here this weekend. I was hoping to get outside and get some yardwork done. Still have some leaves in the back yard to remove and there are several limbs and small branches on the ground from the snow we had earlier this month.

This is Hendrix (the Husky) and Marley (the lab mix). I LOVE this picture.

Marley is such a little diva. We actually managed to get Hendrix to SIT DOWN for a picture and she just had to be involved, too!

We're expecting 77 degrees today! This compared to almost a foot of snow less than a week ago. Mother Nature sure is the fickle one! I'm just glad it's Saturday and I can be home to enjoy the beautiful weather.

Miss M and I were skeptical when we heard we were expecting some accumulation last night. After all, it hasn't snowed all winter! But we were in the thick of it driving home from the Quilt Show last night. We slid into the driveway and by the time we got unpacked from our weekend in Smithfield, she was able to do this!

We ended up with about 10 inches of the white stuff, so she and I both are enjoying our first (and probably last) snow day of the season today.

The Quilt Show was a LOT of fun. I really enjoyed looking at all the beautiful quilts. What some people can do with a needle is absolutely amazing! Miss Lola loaded up on pretty fabrics and thread, and Diana and I found some cross stitch floss as well. I also found a booth called "Precious Memories" and got these cool hooks for the kitchen for $1 each...

My Computer Died...Sob

Our computer took it's last gasping breath a few days ago. We came home to a loud buzzing airplane-ish like sound and now it won't even turn on. It did have a good run, though, and I'm so sorry to see it go. Hopefully I'll be getting a new one soon, but until then I have to check in on my lunch break at work.

Things are going well right now for Miss M and I. She had her 5th grade play last night and danced with a top hat and cane, and was very cute. She sure is growing up!

It's rainy here today. No school for Miss M so I'm going to go in to work early to get some things done. I've been absolutely swamped trying to help the boss get the fiscal year closed out. Every year at this time I come home exhausted.

I got my flu shot on Friday, so I should be good for the season. Have you gotten yours yet?

Sick & Tired

Every year I get sick about this time. It's always right before the flu shots are given at work, too. EVERY year. I was down and out this past weekend with a severe sinus infection. Just how much mucus is in an average sized adult head anyway? But other than still sounding like a man when I talk I'm feeling MUCH better.

Miss M is looking forward to Friday night trick-or-treating. She still hasn't completely decided what she's going to dress up as, but it looks like it's going to have to be something warm. The nights are really chilly lately.

Hopefully tonight we'll get to carve the Jack-o-lanterns and roast some pumpkin seeds. Yum.

Little By Little

This is my bedroom so far...

I still need my nightstand and dresser, but the bed is set up and the curtains are hung. I slept like a baby last night.

Yesterday Miss M, her Dad, Patrick, his girlfriend Danielle and I went to the Village Fair at Maddy's school. The only game she would play this year was the cake walk. Last year she was SO into everything and wanted to do everything twice. This year, she's a 5th grader and apparently all the games are for "babies." My little girl is growing up. :(

Today we're heading out to the Pumpkin Festival at the Berry Farm. We'll get to pick our pumpkin from the vine, so it should be lots of fun. Hopefully Miss M won't find these activities too babyish!

Don't Let His Looks Fool You

This guy is SHARP! (As in he is NOT happy to be in a new place!)

We had a time trying to get Mr. Thomas into the new house. Miss M had to tackle him, then I rushed over and grabbed him by the nap of the neck. He threw his back paws up and gave me a good 3" scratch on the inside of my arm. OUCH! I think he's STILL under the bed. He's such a wimp. On the other hand, Miss Sable came in like she owns the place and is very comfortable. Girls are SO much better than boys! LOL

We're still moving, but we don't have very much left to go. Maddy is adjusting really well and seems to be so happy in her new house. So is Mommy. :)

Hopefully I'll have some pics to share this weekend.

Tonight's The Night

I got tickled at her last night because I was unpacking the kitchen stuff and she asked if we could stay there and sleep on the floor. HA! I've got her tucked in with some hot chocolate and the remote, and she's fine for now. I hate it when she's sick. :(

The packing is coming right along. I brought up a couple of boxes from the basement last night and found some things I'd forgotten I had. It was like Christmas! LOL

I also found my cut glass cake plate that I bought in Germany.

AND, a brand new set of flannel sheets still in the package! Nice new sheets for a new home.

DS worked at a restaurant that went out of business, and they gave what food they had in stock to the employees on the last night. DS brought home 6 pounds of ground bison. I was skeptical as I don't like "wild game," but I caved and tried it. OMG, it's DELICIOUS! And, apparently better for you than beef...

"Buffalo (American Bison) meat is sweeter in flavor and leaner than beef. Bison meat is also healthier than skinless chicken, pork, lamb and even some fish, especially if you consider the mercury levels in fish nowadays. There is little shrinkage in bison meat, and because there is less fat to insulate the bison meat, it cooks faster than beef. Furthermore, in comparison to grain-fed beef, buffalo meat contains 69% more iron and higher levels of vitamins, minerals and omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, which help promote a healthy metabolism."

Phone Calls, Address Changes, Transfers

Isn't it fun transferring all the utilities and doing address changes when you move? *rolls eyes*

I spent my lunch break yesterday talking to 15 different people at Verizon just to get them to transfer my service. I was beginning to think that the "right department" was a figment of their imagination! But I finally got everything settled and we're a go for October 9th. Of course I have to be there "between 8 and 12" and they'll show up at 3. I know that drill.

Luckily the electric and trash service were easy. Now all that's left is the water.

New Season - New Beginning

I knew it was coming. So hard to face, but it's the best thing to do. I'm leaving my home with my daughter and starting a new life.

I'm in a very unhealthy relationship with her father. I'm so glad we never remarried.

I found a very cute and cozy little home about 2 blocks from her school. We start moving next week.

It's Here! We Made It!

I was actually starting to wonder if Richmond would EVER cool off, but it looks like we've arrived. It's amazing to me how it can be 95 here one day and 74 the next. *rolls eyes*

I'm hoping to get some work done in the yard in the coming weeks. I'd like to get it raked and cleaned of debris before the leaves start falling to make it easier when they do. I sure am looking forward to all the pretty colors!

Just A Swingin'

When I bought this house I asked our Realtor to see if the seller would consider leaving the wonderful backyard swing, and he did. I just love its patina and country feel.

I haven't had the time this year to devote to sprucing up that corner of the yard, but I plan to add some pretty flowers and comfy pillows in the Spring. It has so much potential!

Where A Blank Wall Once Was

This was my project for yesterday. The boys and I got the upper cabinet hung in the kitchen!

I am SO pleased with the way it looks! Patrick and I carried it upstairs and I strained my back pulling on it, so we waited for Randy to get home to hang it. Getting old is for the birds. I could've carried it by myself 20 years ago! LOL

Little by little the kitchen is coming together. :)

Open Letter To The Idiot Riding My Bumper This Morning

Dear Idiot,

I realize traffic was heavy this morning, you were obviously late for work, and it's a Wednesday, but I feel I need to let you in on a few secrets about our commute this morning...

1. I cannot go any faster than the car in front of me. I have no control over the fact that the moron is reading the morning paper, dialing his cellphone, and having his morning coffee while trying to maintain a speed of 45 MPH.

2. If the moron spills coffee on the slacks he was just ironing and stops suddenly, I'm braking. If a squirrel, a child, or Scott Bakula runs out onto the road in front of me, I'm braking. If God Almighty decides to send down a lightning bolt opening a chasm 50 ft wide in front of me to make me appreciate the fact that I'm alive today, I'm braking.

You're a 40-year old suburban businessman. What makes you think you have the reflexes to stop your vehicle in any of the above scenarios in time to prevent plowing my trunk into my dashboard? Are you wearing your super hero boxers today?

3. We are both going to arrive at the next stoplight at the same time. You're not getting through the red light until I do. Accept that.

Oh, and I'm sorry about the brake check right before I turned off. Hope the knot on your head doesn't hurt too badly. :)

7 Quirky Things

Jennifer over at Running With Scissors posted "7 Quirky Things" about herself that I really enjoyed reading. So, following her lead, I challenged myself to come up with 7 things about myself that most people would consider totally weird. (Trust me, I found MANY more, but these are the ones I could share in public...LOL)

7 Quirky Things About Me

1. I have to hold my nose when I go underwater. Let me tell you, I look like a real pro jumping off the diving board!

2. I don't wear a seatbelt (unless I'm riding with someone who MAKES me). I would rather be ejected from a car and take my chances than to be pinned in and trapped. I guess it's a phobia?

3. I like cornbread crumbled into an ice cold glass of milk.

4. I ate the ends off matches when I was little. And raw bacon. And lived!

5. I'm a true blue Coal Miner's Daughter.

6. I LOVE storage items. Hat boxes, steamer trunks, old chests, decorative boxes, bags, etc. It's a sickness, really.

7. I adore storms. Rainy days make me very happy.

Fall In Fifteen Days!

The temps here are still so very hot, and Hanna made it so unbearably humid the past few days that it's just been miserable. But relief is coming, and I can hardly wait!

Speaking of Hanna, we had some pretty serious rain on Friday night and early yesterday. The wind knocked down a few branches here and there, but luckily our power stayed on.

Yesterday I woke up with a migraine from hell and ended up trying to sleep most of the day. Thankfully it's gone now, but what a way to spend a Saturday! NOT!

Well, We Lost...

But it was a good game! I really enjoyed that 'ole familiar feeling of butterflies when the game got down to the wire and the anticipation of the next play. 16-7 is nothing to be ashamed of considering we were playing the Superbowl Champs. Onward to next week!

Hanna is on her way, and there are warnings in place for strong storms tonight and tomorrow. They even rescheduled and played some of the area high school football games last night, which I think is a good move. I'm keeping fingers crossed that everyone stays safe and she blows in and out without any damage.

Tonight's the night...it's gonna be alright...(oops, sorry Rod! LOL) I'm SO EXCITED about the season FINALLY starting! It feels like it's been forever. Win or lose, I'm just glad my boys are back on the field.

Hurricane Hanna is heading for the SC shore tomorrow and will work her way up the Coast over the weekend. They're predicting lots of rain and wind for us on Saturday. I just hope the power doesn't go out. I hate it when that happens!

First Day & A Relief

It did my heart good to see her so excited this morning. She was up at 6:30! I know it'll fizzle after a few days, but I'm enjoying it while it lasts. LOL

As far as my test results, BENIGN CYSTS! Radiologist told me they were absolutely nothing to worry about. Whew, what a relief. I'm good for another year! Thank you to everyone who sent up a little prayer for me. (((HUGS)))

School starts tomorrow for Miss M. She's as ready as she'll be, and very excited to get started. I'll have the traditional "first day" picture to share tomorrow. I also go tomorrow morning for the mamo retake and ultrasound. Can't wait to hear the word "benign" so I can just get on with it.

The Holiday Grand Plan started yesterday, and I'm in the mood to start planning for Christmas this year. Not really sure where I'll be when the holidays roll around, but it's nice to think about being organized and completely finished so I can just sit back and enjoy them. I so love Christmas.

Our puppy, Miss Marley, is being fixed today *shudder* so she's going to need extra TLC this weekend. Pour baby, I hope she recovers quickly and has an easy time of it. She's so innocent and sweet. I hate the thought of her going under the knife, so please send up a little prayer for her today.

and $68 later Miss M finally has all her school supplies! I feel so badly for parents buying for more than one child! Things are so expensive, and the teachers (whom I respect greatly) sometimes don't realize that having to buy "gel" glue sticks or "plastic" pocket folders can be somewhat of a challenge when you live payday to payday. I'm just glad it's over for another year, other than the occasional pencil or filler paper.

We've had rain the past two days and I'm ecstatic! I just hope it continues through the evening because I don't have to go anywhere and can sit and enjoy it. (LOVE the rain!)

I love puzzles. Mom and I used to sit for hours on end working them and chatting away. The bigger the better. My daughter has grown to love them as well which is so cool! This is one she just finished...

I spoke with the nurse and she said there is a "2cm oval density in the right breast," so the doc has ordered an ultrasound along with the additional views. I'm certain it's nothing, but of course I'll do what they tell me to do like a good little patient! LOL

We're heading out to the County Fair today. The weather looks like it's going to be bearable, too! I hope everyone has a fabulous Sunday!

Mamogram report came and it seems I need to go back for some further "views." No reason noted on the letter, but there was a "finding" that necessitates them taking another look. Joy. I made 2 more loaves of Amish Friendship Bread last night, and I remembered the eggs! It's amazing what a difference they made! LOL We tried chocolate pudding this time and it was fabulous. I know chocolate and bread doesn't sound too appetizing together, but the bread is really more of a cake. YUM!

Wanna see my dream house? I drive by this little gem every day, and for some reason I'm just drawn to it's coziness and serenity...

Maybe someday when the kids are grown and on their own I can scale down and move into a dollhouse like this. Ah, what a dream!

Meet Me At The Fair!

The Chesterfield County Fair starts this week! I'm looking forward to taking Miss M this weekend. I can smell that yummy Fair food now! I had intentions of entering my current cross stitch work-in-progress this year, but alas I didn't get finished in time. Next year I hope to have it framed and ready to go, though. I always enjoy browsing through all the exhibits, and of course Miss M LOVES the animals!

My BFF's hubby had a heart attack on Thursday evening. He's doing well and is expected to get to go home today. I've been praying hard for them. I hope he recovers completely and things are back to normal soon. Scary stuff...he's only 41!

I've got to get school shopping wrapped up this week. I'm not as excited as a lot of Moms out there because school for me means having to wake Miss M every morning. She's definitely NOT a morning person. Sometimes I wonder if she's even my daughter! She'd better plan on an evening shift job when she grows up. lol

The kitchen is really starting to come together. I still have to mount two upper cabinets, do the floor and lighting, and paint the ceiling, but already it looks SO much better than what it did when we moved in.

Unfortunately I experienced "technical difficulties" with the countertop project over the weekend.

The saw kept binding up and wouldn't go but about a foot into the cut before stopping completely. Now, mind you, my experience with a circular saw is minimal, and the thing was very hateful with all it's safety bells and whistles (who needs all those anyway?)

I called in reinforcements this morning and after dear son #2 assessed the situation, he immediately saw the problem. The saw blade was loose! He tightened it up and the stupid countertop cut like butter! Imagine that! So he's going to finish whacking off the excess today and I'll be able to move it against the wall this evening. If only I had called him sooner!

What a beautiful day! The sun is shining, a slight breeze is blowing, and I don't have to work tomorrow! Life is good! LOL

Lynne and I are meeting for dinner after work, then we're going back to her house to stitch for a while.

Tomorrow I plan to use power tools (they make me feel so manly) and get some work done on the kitchen. I've decided my island has to go. I've lived with it for a few weeks now, and it's just too big and doesn't leave enough room in the kitchen. So, I'm going to whack off about 10 inches of the countertop and scoot the cabinets over against the wall. That will open up the room and give me space to put my smaller island in the middle of the floor. I'm sure I'll like that much better. It's a Work-in-Progress!

Eggs? What Eggs?

OK, so my BFF Diana gave me an Amish Frienship Bread starter. I carefully followed the instructions for 9 days...mushing the bag, adding the flour, milk, and sugar, and letting the air out when needed. Finally I'm ready to bake this fabulous bread. Never made bread before, but I'm an OK baker, so I gave it a try.

I FORGOT THE EGGS! Not just one egg...3 EGGS! So, needless to say the bread was a little...um...flat. More like a very moist brownie than bread. But it was delicious anyway! Both loaves have been all but gobbled up by my crew of garbage disposals!

So, 10 days from now I'll be baking again. This time, WITH eggs...

Fried Green Tomatoes

YUM! My coworker just gave me a mess of green tomatoes. It's been a LONG time since I've fried up a plate of these babies! I can hardly WAIT!!!

The weekend was relatively quiet at Mays Manor. I got a lot of housework done and played Animal Crossing with Miss M. We have a great time together talking about our characters, watching each other play, and finding things that we know the other will like. I love spending time with her.

After work I'm off to the grocery store to get ingredients for my Amish Friendship Bread, and some corn meal for these tomatoes! Miss M and I are going to have fun this evening!

Are you ready for the weekend??? It's been a long week and I'm so ready to sleep in, spend time with my princess, and of course, get the house cleaned and laundry done. (That last bit isn't much fun, but it sure does make me feel good once it's done! Hey, that rhymes! LOL)

I'm hoping to get some more work done on the kitchen, too. My home was considered a "fixer" when I bought it 2 years ago this October. It's a 1950's California Rancher and nothing has been done to update it SINCE the 1950's!

I've taken up the old stinky green indoor/outdoor carpet which was a mammoth project. Underneath the black foam backing which was literally stuck to the floor, I found the most gorgeous oak hardwoods!

I've also painted the living room, ripped out the old rusted metal kitchen cabinets, and painted the kitchen walls. It's a slow process, but I'm enjoying doing the work myself. I'll share more before/after pictures as I get things done.

FUN STUFF! Thankfully I had a very nice tech who made me feel as comfortable as one can feel considering another woman is touching "the girls" and squishing them into pancakes! But at least it's over for another year. :)

I didn't mention our TV is out! They've been cutting down trees next door and we think they've hit a wire or something. Verizon is supposed to be out this afternoon to fix it. It's been 3 days since I've seen a forensic show and I'm going into withdrawal. My stitching is suffering immensely as well! LOL

I'm off for more furniture shopping with Lynne this evening. Lord help me! ROFL

The sofa shopping on Monday night was a hoot! We went to two different places and spent hours looking at different models, colors, and styles. We liked the ones with the recliners on both ends, but Miss Lynne's legs are too long to put the footrest back down once it's up! She was stuck several times, and even though I thought about just leaving her and pretending I didn't know this crazy woman, I waited until she figured out how to put them down. LOL Personally, I liked the one with the built-in massage. Who needs a man with one of those around??? ROFL

Well, it's Monday again. I had a great weekend but they're just never long enough!

Saturday I met Diana in Williamsburg for a little shopping. We went to the cross stitch shop first, and had a great time looking through fabrics and fibers. I picked out a pretty piece of linen for an upcoming project, and a few flosses for one I'm working on now.

After that, we headed to the Pottery. We were both VERY disappointed this trip because the prices have went up to retail! We did find some gorgeous ribbon in 10-yard spools for $1.49, so we both got some of that. And I bought Miss M a net storage bin for her Webkinz. But that's all! I have never gotten out of there that cheap! Even the shelled peanuts I buy every trip for the past 7 years at $3.99 a bag have gone up to $7.49! Things sure have changed.

We had a wonderful lunch at Cracker Barrel. I had the usual chicken & rice and D had breakfast! I found Miss M a crystal growing kit, and treated myself to a bag of maple nut goodies.

Yesterday I cleaned and lounged and helped Maddy with her crystal project. It was a great lazy Sunday.

Lynne and I are sofa shopping this evening, so I'm looking forward to spending time with her.

Hope to have some pictures to share tomorrow if I can kick them off the computer tonight! LOL

We play our first Preseason Game on August 3rd against the Colts. I am SO EXCITED for the season to start! I've been in MAJOR withdrawal since the ProBowl. Happens every year. But it won't be long now. Nothing better than the cool Fall air, dinner in the crockpot, my stitching, and watching the Redskins play (watching them WIN is even better! LOL)

Lunch With Lynne

Lynne and I went to Max & Erma's for lunch. YUM! That mozarella chicken sandwich is just my most favorite EVER!

We also did some brainstorming for our TS County Fair coming up next month. I think it was good for her to get her mind off moving and unpacking for a while. That stuff can get so overwhelming.

I went after work to get my bloodwork done that the doc ordered last Thursday. The gal MISSED my vein and had to adjust the needle (ouch), so therefore I have a big bruise now. HATE it when that happens!

I got the back deck swept off in between running for cover from those little black fuzzy mosquitos. I need to look online to find something to spray on the bushes to get rid of those things, or at least keep them at bay. They bite as soon as they land on you, so before you realize they're there, they've given you a whelt! HATE those things!

It's supposed to be over 100 on Tuesday, then rain on Wednesday. I hope it does rain this time and actually cool things off instead of making it worse. LOVE this Richmond weather (said tongue in cheek).

It's Finally Friday! I'm so glad. It's been a very long and eventful week at Mays Manor.

Miss M and I did go visit Lynne's new house and it's is really nice. I think she's going to be very happy there. It's even farther away from me than her old house and I'm not too happy about that, but she finally has a place of her own after months of struggling to find her "place" after the divorce. She said Patrick was a big help to her, so they had a good day together. I do plan to go raid her stash once she gets everything in her sewing room organized. *evil grin*

Not sure what's on tap for me this weekend. It's totally up to Rob and what he wants to do with the ultimatum I gave him this morning. I'm either working on the house or packing! Either way I'll just be glad when the whole thing is over with.

Had The Oil Checked Yesterday

Yup, it was my annual appointment time with my GYN. Gotta love those! It's the first one since my surgery. She wrote orders also for bloodwork to check my thyroid and iron. Something is making me so very tired and I'm hoping a simple med adjustment will do the trick. Can you be anemic still after a hysterectomy?

Lynne closed on her new house yesterday, so she's busy moving in. She's so excited I can feel her glowing over the phone! Patrick is there with her now helping to install deadbolt locks and to move stuff in from the Pod. The movers will get there this evening, and Maddy and I are going over after work. I can't wait to see my new vacation home! Heehee

Lesson From Mother Nature

So earlier in the Spring Miss M notices that there is a cardinal who has fixed up and taken over an old nest right outside my bedroom window. She has 3 sweet little eggs that she is sitting on and eyes us intently each time we peek to make sure we don't intend to bother them.

Soon enough the eggs hatch and she and the proud papa are busily flying back and forth with yummies to feed their little tummies.

One morning I noticed that one of the three little birdies was teetering dangerously on the edge of the nest each time a parent came to feed them. I worried all day, and sure enough when I got home that evening there were only two in the nest. I looked all over for the third little fella but never did find him. :(

The other two were also getting very close to the edge of the nest. I told Rob that we needed to do something to prevent them from falling, so we decided to take the lid to a box and rest it on the branches below the nest to "catch" the little ones when they fell. We had good intentions!

As he was putting the lid into the tree, I saw something drop out and hit the ground. He knocked one of the little birds out of the nest! I acted quickly to pick it up and hand it to him to put back in the nest. As he did, the other one fell out! It was hopping away as fast as it could and I ran after it trying to put it back where it belonged. As all this was happening Mama and Daddy were dive-bombing us and fussing as loudly as they could to let us know they were pissed that we were messing with their babies! Every time Rob would put one of the babies back in, the other one would fall out. This continued for a long time until finally he got them both in and yelled, "RUN!"

I went straight to the bedroom window and watched as one of them flapped his little wings and plumetted to the ground. I went out and picked it up and put it in a box. I watched the other one until it decided to leap out, scooped him up, and put him in the box. Now what?

I called a rehabber and left a message and waited patiently for her to call me back. Maddy was fascinated by the babies and wanted to keep them. Mama and Daddy were outside flying around like mad trying to figure out what just happened. She finally called me back and I explained the situation to her thinking she would be very sympathetic and want me to deliver the babies to her immediately before I killed them. But, instead she remained very calm and asked me, "Do they have all their feathers?" "Yes" I answered. "Then take them back out there and leave them be. They're SUPPOSED to fall out of the nest like that!" OMG, I felt SO stupid! Apparently when baby birds leave the nest, Mama still feeds them as they hop around on the ground for a couple of days before they learn to fly. Who knew!!!

So, I can just about bet that Mama won't be building a nest in my yard next Spring. Too much DRAMA! LOL

I Have An Island!

WooHoo! The boys carried up the other kitchen cabinet this weekend. When we put the countertop on it stuck WAY out in front of the cabinets and it dawned on me that it's a bar! So, we moved the cabinet to the middle of the kitchen and it became the neatest island with all kinds of counterspace. I'm going to get 3 stools to set on one side, and drop some pendant lights over it. I really love it.

The room is really starting to come together. Once I get the countertops tiled and the two upper cabinets hung it's going to actually look like a kitchen again. I wish I didn't have to depend on anyone to help me because it would already have been done by now otherwise. For some reason the rest of my family just isn't as motivated as I am. Hhhhmmm...wonder why? *rolls eyes*

As usual, the weekend wasn't nearly long enough. Oh, how I wish I could be a SAHM and be taken care of by someone else for a change. Not in this lifetime!

My Birthday Cards

Just look at all the cards I received from my TS friends this year...

Each one of them had a little surprise tucked inside, from magnets to flosses to notepads. I also received Rosewood Manor's "Something Old Something New" from Carol, which was on my Wish List. I had such a wonderful birthday this year!

I took MIL to meet a friend at the bus stop last night for a layover she had in Richmond. We picked her up and we went to DBIL Brian's club, Infuzion. We had a nice visit and I stitched while they caught up on old times. The food was awesome, and they have an ice bar where everything inside is made of ice! It's kept at 23 degrees. Even the walls and glasses are made of ice. Awesome experience. We didn't get home until 12:30, so I slept like a rock last night/this morning. LOL

I'm so glad it's FRIDAY! I hope to get a lot done around the house this weekend, especially another cabinet in the kitchen.

I've been reading about The Compact and I've been wondering if I could actually go a year without buying anything new (other than necessities like food & medicine). I know I could go a year without buying any new cross stitch stash for myself. I've got an enitre LNS in my stash closet. But it's made me wonder what I actually waste money on that I could do without. We definitely eat out too much, so the elimination of that alone would save a lot of money.

And saving money isn't the only positive thing that could come of deciding to limit retail therapy. With all the talk about "going green" and recycling these days, you have to step back and wonder how you can help the effort. Gotta leave something for the Grandbabies!!!

Today Is My Hysterversary!

One year ago today I went under the knife. Best decision I've ever made in my life. Man, what a difference that surgery has made! Now if I could only figure out how to lose the weight I've gained since being "fixed!" LOL

Christmas in July has had me thinking over the last few days. Miss M and I have decided that we're going to try our best to have an old-fashioned Christmas this year. We're going to make some salt dough ornaments, string popcorn & cranberries, drive around to look at the lights, watch Christmas shows & movies together, and bake lots of goodies. And of course get a live tree. It's time to get our holidays back to what they're supposed to be and not concentrate so much on money. Surprisingly she's on board with the idea and I'm very excited about it!

I'm going to try to get the boys to carry up another cabinet to the kitchen and get the countertop on. I'm anxious to get everything that belongs in the kitchen actually "IN" the kitchen. This whole remodeling thing is too much like WORK! LOL

Miss M has been asking for one of my DSis's kittens. Nevermind that the critters are taking over my house. Never mind that everybody wants them and promises to take care of them. Never mind that we already have two gerbils, a hamster, a snake, two cats, and two dogs. It's not enough. We NEED a new kitten! I'm looking for a suitable outhouse to move my belongings into. I hear Lowe's has them on sale...

Storms, Shores, & Snores

Sunday was such a lazy day. I woke up with a headache thanks to the birthday drink of rum & Sierra Mist that Rob made me. I should know better than to drink liquor with all that sugar! I snored most of the day away trying to shake the headache.
Lynne came over around 4ish and brought my birthday present. She got me Shores of Hawk Run Hollow which I've wanted since it came out. It'll be a while before I start it because I want to do the Village companion piece next, but I've got it now and it'll wait patiently until I'm ready for it. I'm so tickled!

We stitched for hours and munched on pizza and cookies. It's so great to get together with her and enjoy our favorite hobby. I got a lot done on House #10, and she worked on a bookmark for an exchange at TS. Around 9:00 it started to storm really heavily. I actually got to listen to the rain and drift off to sleep. There's nothing better in this world than a storm lullaby!

42. I'm 42. I remember when I thought 30 was old. I'm not sure where my life has gone, but one thing's for sure...I can't remember most of it!

I had an absolutely wonderful day. I spent it stitching and napping. LOL The boys bought me a FABULOUS Cracker Barrel rocking chair that I dearly love. I've wanted one for so long. They bought it assembled and somehow got it in Randy's little car to bring it home. I love my boys!

Later on in the evening Dana took me out to dinner. We went to Hops and had a wonderful steak. After dinner, we went to Michael's where I found some cute little things for the upcoming Advent Exchange at TS. We then headed to Bed, Bath and Beyond, and she bought me a PedEgg. I had been wanting to try one for a while, and it works really well! I had a great birthday this year.

Today would have been my Mom's 63rd birthday. I can't believe she's been gone 5 years. But those fireworks in the sky are her birthday celebration, and I thank God for this day in 1945 when she was brought into the world.

Mom! I love you!!!

Last night MJ and I went to Penney's and I got my hair cut. Garyn really took his time with the shampooing and it felt so nice! He took about 4 inches off of my hair and I really love how it looks and feels. And it's much cooler. I bought myself a new bathing suit and a couple shirts and pairs of slacks. I even got myself a pair of jeans that were on sale! I haven't worn jeans in a long time.

Tonight we're going to grill steaks. I'm doing a pasta salad and MJ is doing the rest. She's been such a help to me lately and I really appreciate her. She has her moments, but for the most part she's not a bad mother-in-law at all.

22 Years Ago Today...

My sweet Granny became an Angel. She was so special to me throughout my childhood. I remember coming home from school every day and stopping by her house for a Little Debbie Swiss Roll that she always kept for me. She bought all my school clothes, my first car, and absolutely spoiled me rotten. I still miss her so much, but I know she's still watching over me as my sweet Guardian Angel.

It's a HOT one today! Supposed to be 95 degrees. There's a chance of thunderstorms this weekend, but in Richmond that usually means more humidity as opposed to it cooling things off. Lovely weather we have here!

Last night I absolutely crashed when I went home. I didn't even feel like stitching. Do you ever feel guilty when you have prime stitching time and don't use it?

I'm going with MIL this evening to Penney's to try and find a new bathing suit. I got a $15 birthday coupon from them, so hopefully I can find one that I like that isn't hugely expensive.

And I just called and my stylist has an opening for this evening, so I'm getting a haircut! Woohoo!

I can't believe it's July already! The year is half over and I'm a year older. Where does the time go?

Sunday was Miss M's surprise birthday party at the pool. She had NO idea and the look on her face was priceless when we yelled, "Surprise!" She came right to me and hugged me and said thank you. That's worth all the gold in the world. We had a great time swimming and cooking out. Zen & Zora enjoyed the pool, and Zora went from being afraid to let go of the side of the pool to jumping off the board! Little stinker!

I spent last night with Lynne at Joanne's place and we had a nice dinner and stitched the evening away. I got the border to house #10 on HOHRH done, and she worked on her Christmas in July tuck. Gotta love those girly sleepovers!

Tonight I hope to get some laundry done and stitch some more. After I get tons of Maddy hugs, that is!
